Retaining Girls in Sport, Recreation & Physical Activity
December 2, 2020 @ 2 pm

This presentation will apply a gender lens to sport and recreation program design in Ontario. In this 60 minute session, participants will learn how to holistically design programs to meet the psycho-social needs of girls, in an effort to increase their participation and retention in sport and recreation.

Presenter: Gabriela (Gaby) Estrada is from Scarborough (Toronto), ON and the proud daughter of immigrant parents from Guatemala.

Gaby is incredibly passionate and a strong advocate for girls and women in sport, physical activity and recreation; she believes in taking an intersectional approach to programs and policies impacting girls and women’s participation, to ensure proper representation of racialized and marginalized communities.

Gaby has over 10 years of experience in the sport sector, having worked with non-profit organizations, grassroots, post-secondary institutions, and social enterprises focused on physical activity. Gaby is currently the Program Director for Fast and Female, overseeing all development and delivery of programs and events across Canada, alongside Fast and Female’s research and evaluation arm, and all anti-racism and inclusion initiatives.

Gaby is in the final year of her Masters of Science at the University of Toronto under the Department of Kinesiology. Gaby’s research is focused on racialized women’s experiences in movement in Scarborough. Outside of this, Gaby is a women’s soccer coach and runs a grass-roots sport and physical activity program for girls and women in East Scarborough and Durham called Girls and Women in Motion.

This session is presented by the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, in partnership with Canadian Women & Sport and Parks and Recreation Ontario.
