Recent Developments
September 2025: Expanding Protected Areas in Ontario
Background:
In July 2024, the Government of Ontario proposed plans to expand its protected area system by increasing the size of several provincial parks and conservation reserves under the Act.
PRO’s Response:
PRO submitted a policy response, expressing support for the proposed expansions. Expanding lands under the Act will protect more ecological sensitive areas and provide additional opportunities for outdoor recreation, academic research, and citizen science.
Outcome:
In September 2025, the Province announced regulations were filed that amend O. Reg. 315/07 and 316/07 under the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006 (PPCRA) to regulate 19 sites as additions to provincial parks and conservation reserves. These changes add 8,603 hectares of land to Ontario's protected areas system. For more information visit ERO Decision Notice (#019-8618).
